In a word, marvelous! Having seen the film, read the book and watched this stage show in London I was keen to see how the touring production would handle the show.
On the night we saw, Pi was played by Adwitha Arumugam who provided a performance full of variety - but this is essentially an ensemble piece with the whole cast providing action and puppetry. It is the puppetry that blows you away, watch Richard Parker closely and you will see a masterclass in animal representation.
Lighting, sound and overall staging are beautiful and enhance the show throughout without ever interrupting the action. Technically there are things the touring show couldn't do that the West End show could due to the need to move from stage to stage - however, the alternate techniques and stagingings that the cast managed were perfectly integrated into the production and didn't diminish the show.
This is a moving story beautifully told ... expect to shed a tear and give a standing ovation, I did!
