Last Shelter & Set and Reset/Reset - T02048846995Candoco Dance Company returns to the stage with a double bill from two boundary-breaking New York based choreographers. The evening begins with Set and Reset/Reset, a recreation of Trisha Brown Dance Company's seminal Set and Reset. The dancers move with dream-like fluidity within a kaleidoscopic form to a driving Laurie Anderson score in their unique version of Trisha Brown's choreography. In contrast, Jeanine Durning's Last Shelter unfolds uniquely at each performance. Teetering at the edge of what could be in an ever-shifting environment, this choreography highlights the velocity and precision of each dancer's decision-making from moment to moment. After a year of working invisibly through a pandemic, audiences witness the labour and desire of the dancer attending to themselves and one another.

Playing Another: Let's Talk About Dis/Notturnino - T0375065217Let's Talk About Dis - In his first company commission Hetain Patel has created a humorous and intimate piece that builds on an exploration of the dancers' individual personalities and physicalities, interrogating questions of what identity is and how it is formed, challenging audiences to think beyond surface appearances. Hetain has worked closely with the dancers and is using their personal stories and experiences in the piece. He is also exploring Candoco's identity, how it is perceived both within and without the company. The piece is very tongue-in-cheek and leverages humour from poking fun at prejudice and the assumptions people make about disability. As many of the dancers are from non-English speaking backgrounds, foreign language also features in the piece, accompanied by 'translations' (perhaps deliberately inaccurate) into English and BSL. Hetain is a celebrated visual artist and one of Sadler's Wells' New Wave Associates. His TED talk ?Who Am I? Think Again', a performative interrogation of identity, inspired by Bruce Lee and performed with Yuyu Rau, has been an internet sensation with over 2 million views. Notturnino - Thomas Hauert's new piece Notturnino is a playful and poignant full company work that takes inspiration from the documentary Tosca's Kiss, a touching film that follows the lives of retired opera singers living in a nursing home in Milan. Using the soundtrack from the film, the piece is scored by fragments of conversation, reminiscences and great operatic works performed by the ageing singers. Through humour and melodrama Notturnino explores the fragility of the human condition. Hauert has created a tightly structured improvisational score with Candoco's dancers, resulting in a truly unique experience for each performance. Topical issues of ageing, vulnerability, fragility are all resonant within the piece and these are experiences shared by disabled and non-disabled people.Choreographer Hetain Patel (Let's Talk About Dis). Three Acts of Play - T01217284445Twisting perception of what dance is, who can dance and who enjoys it - an evening of three diverse dance works. Following his Evening Standard Theatre Award for The Most Incredible Thing with the Pet Shop Boys, choreographer Javier de Frutos returns to Candoco for the third time. Inspired by the poetic perfumes of Tennessee Williams and set to traditional Mexican Ranchera music, his duet is a celebration of difference and rebellion: 'I would rather die on my feet than live on my knees' (revolutionary Emiliano Zapata). In the second work of the evening, renowned theatre and dance artist Wendy Houstoun combines movement with text and meaning with humour. In a performance loosely based on Shakespeare's The Tempest, expect elaborate costumes and theatrical movements giving it a truly unique style. One of Candoco's highlights is the restaging of one of Trisha Brown's signature works, which confirmed her as a pioneer of contemporary dance. Set to the original upbeat, contagious Laurie Anderson score, Set and Reset/Reset with Trisha Brown Dance Company is a fluid, joyful work of pure dance. An SLI (Sign Language Interpreter) will be provided in Wendy Houstoun's piece.
