T0847948192In their 10 year history, Ensemble 360 have consistently championed modern music, and this programme features two of Hungary's greatest composers, Bela Bartok and Gyorgy Kurtag. The third quartet is one of Bartok's most significant pieces, revealing an extraordinary mix of effects in a short time-span. Alongside these pieces, they'll be playing Brahms' Clarinet Quintet, considered by some to be his most profound chamber composition. It has an air of melancholy but is punctuated by moments of wild frenzy, not least with an extraordinary outburst in the slow movement.

Beethoven's tribute to Mozart's Don Giovanni was written only five years after Mozart's death. T1602236093Cesar Franck's Piano Quintet is a work of extraordinary passion that is almost entirely out of character with the restrained beauty of the composer's other work. So brazen was the expressivity that the dedicatee and pianist at the ?rst performance, Camille Saint-Saens, stormed o? the stage at the end of the concert in disgust. T0293458810In their ?rst performance of the season, Ensemble 360 play two outstanding works of the Romantic repertoire. Written in 1842, Schumann's Piano Quartet in E ?at is an invigorating work displaying great subtlety and re?nement. Its musical structure is in?uenced by Beethoven but with passages of sprightliness reminiscent of much of Mendelssohn's music. Schubert's Octet of 1824 also owes much to Beethoven, having been commissioned by Count Ferdinand von Troyer as a piece to complement the latter composer's Septet. By adding a second violin, Schubert created a largely spontaneous, congenial work, with hints of moroseness in common with his other chamber pieces of this period. Tonight's concert supports the Women of Steel fundraising campaign to commission a statue by Martin Jennings.

& Marina Lewycka: Conversation Pieces - T991926648Ensemble 360 play a sequence of pieces that touch on the family background and musical experiences of one of the UK's favourite novelists, Marina Lewycka. During the concert, ensemble members will discuss with Marina the importance of her Ukrainian heritage and exchange thoughts on the nature of performing and listening to chamber music. Ranging across three centuries, the music in tonight's programme moves from the elegance of Bach to the liveliness of Poulenc's Trio, and the Romantic yearning of Chopin's early Piano Trio. Prokofiev's Five Melodies began as wordless songs for the Ukrainian soprano Nina Koshetz, but Prokofiev quickly made a virtuoso arrangement of them for the Polish violinist Paul Kochanski.
