absolute SOLO II - T39798735A triple bill of solos looking backwards and forwards at award-winning Birmingham choreographer Rosie Kay's personal experience as a female in dance. 21 years on from her first ever solo show ‘Absolute Solo‘ which she performed in the 1999 Edinburgh Festival, and six years since last appearing on stage herself, Kay returns to performing with a triple bill of solos. Her new work, ‘Adult Female Dancer', was created in the 2020 lockdown and explores the deep emotional connection between her life and dance. Now, as an older dancing female, she has something to say about the female body and the experience of being female and being on stage. Part autobiography, part socio-anthropological study, Kay uses ideas of performance, identity, sex and gender to explore her new dancing spirit. The triple bill also includes an archive film of the international award-winning ‘Patisserie' (1999) and Kay's first public performance of ‘Artemis Clown' (originally commissioned by Eliot Smith Dance Company).

5 Soldiers: The Body is the Frontline - T0454807917In 2008, Birmingham based choreographer Rosie Kay joined the 4th Battalion The Rifles, to watch and participate in full battle exercises, and visited the Defence and National Rehabilitation Centre for our Armed Forces. What came of these observations is an award-winning, five-star work, performed offsite at Yeomanry House, Bloomsbury. 5 SOLDIERS offers no moral stance on war. Instead, through Kay's trademark intense physical and athletic dance theatre, it questions what it is that we ask of our soldiers and explores how the human body remains essential to war, even in the 21st century,

MK Ultra - T1766821526Taking its name from the LSD-fuelled experiments conducted by the US Military in the 1950s and 1960s, MK ULTRA looks at the rise of conspiracy theory amongst young people and in particular the theory that these experiments have continued in the realms of pop music and fashion. After extensive online research into conspiracy culture and interviews with 16-25 year olds from the Midlands, Kay and Curtis developed a hypothesis that ponders whether the lack of trust in politicians and established political systems has given rise to alternative theories of power and control. Hypnotic video design alternate with documentary-like sections of Curtis' signature montage style, creating a kaleidoscope effect on audiences, both brainwashing and playful. The show features costumes from Lady Gaga's designer Gary Card, a gold mirrored stage, hypnotic triangular projections by Louis Price, a pulsing soundtrack of American trap music and a mesmerising score by electro-acoustic composer and University of Birmingham lecturer Dr Annie Mahtani.Choreographer Rosie Kay. This show provides an intimate view of the training that prepares our soldiers for the sheer physicality of combat, for the possibility of injury, and the impact conflict has on the bodies and minds of everyone it reaches. This visceral piece has a powerful physicality, moments of humour and is full of honesty, all inspired by input from serving and former soldiers.

5 Soldiers - The Body in the Frontline - T017322107925 Soldiers - The Body Is The Frontline is a powerful dance-theatre production that explores the physicality of modern warfare, and the idea that despite modern military technological advances we still use human physical violence as a threat, a deterrent, a weapon. Typical of Kay’s brutal and athletic style, this timely, provocative and extremely hard-hitting work investigates how the soldiers are physically trained and the physiological impact it has on them. Rosie Kay spent over a year securing a period of research with the British Army. 5 Soldiers comes out of a combination of this experience as well as the deep knowledge of the body a choreographer brings to this type of activity.

Double Points: K and Supernova - T01919616493Double Points: K is set against a soundtrack of dub step, electro and classical music. This explosive, sensual and dynamic duet combines the beauty of pure movement with the thrill of dancers pushing themselves to the edge. Two dancers seem drawn together in a unique universe, delicately balanced on the edge of time and space. Breaking free with an explosion of energy, the two find a new way to communicate, spiralling with split second timing around each other. As the energy and pace grows, the dancers seem to fly; elegantly at first and then strutting and rushing across the whole space. Supernova is the rare occurrence when dying stars vibrate like giant speakers before exploding in a spectacular blast. Taking inspiration from time, space, energy and matter, Rosie Kay translates huge cosmic ideas into the physical, the personal and the emotional. Supernova is a journey of five extraordinary female dancers who translate the macro into the micro sensations inside us all.

A brief encounter with Rosie Kay - Asylum - T0485057731Two dancers confront their identities in a landscape of lost baggage and personal belongings in this intimate duet by Dance Umbrella newcomer, Rosie Kay. Struggling onto the stage with an almost comic overload of plastic bags, the dancers [Guilherme Miotto] and [Rosie Kay], slowly shed their defences ending in a whirling waltz of pain, want and need. Asylum was inspired by themes of exile and relocation arising from Rosie's work with local asylum agencies, research on Bosnian refugees and interviews with Serbian asylum seekers. It is a thought-provoking piece of dance theatre: personal, angry and passionate. The dancers perform with exceptional, heartfelt energy as they literally push themselves to the edge.
