Images of Dance

The programme: - LES SYLPHIDES - Mikhail Fokine / Chopin (14 dancers, 30 minutes) In honour of the centenary of Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, who premiered Les Sylphides in their inaugural 1909 Paris season, the programme opens with Fokine’s exquisite homage to the era of the Romantic Ballet, in moonlit white tulle to Chopin’s beautiful music. Originally danced by Anna Pavlova, Les Sylphides was described by Fokine as "the personification of a poetic vision". (Images perform Les Sylphides by permission of The Fokine Trust.) interval CIEL POMMELÉ -Stephen Sherriff / Poulenc [ 8 dancers, 20 minutes ] A newly-commissioned abstract neo-classical ballet by ex-Royal Ballet dancer and choreographer Stephen Sheriff, set to Poulenc’s Piano Concerto, Ciel Pommelé translates as Mackerel Sky, a mixed weather condition of fleecy clouds on a warm, sunny atmosphere. interval MAD ABOUT THE BOY - Isira Makuloluwe / 1950s & 1960s songs [ 17 dancers, 45 minutes ] To close the evening on an irresistibly upbeat note, Images of Dance offers an entertainingly knowing take on Grimms’ fairytale of The Twelve Dancing Princesses scripted by Tim Tubbs and choreographed by British Sri-Lankan, European award-winning choreographer (and former London Studio Centre dance graduate) Isira Makuloluwe, who update the story to a 1959 finishing school, where the reluctant debutantes neglect their etiquette to dance the nights away with a teenage pop idol, set to a wittily arranged soundscore of 1950s/1960s pop songs.
