The Warsaw Philharmonic is the leading orchestra of Poland and has had a long and distinguished history since its foundation in 1901. Composer Andre Panufnik was instrumental in the re-establishment of the orchestra after the war, and the orchestra will honour his work with a special performance of his elegantly-crafted Sinfonia Rustica. Bruch's well-known and well-liked Violin Concerto follows. Performed by leading Polish violinist Kuba Jakowicz, the concerto features clear melodies and the tricky technique double stopping (where more than one note is played on the violin at the same time). Reminiscent of Hungarian folk music, the concerto is a dramatic piece which culminates in a passionate frenzy, with the orchestra and violin getting louder and faster. Rounding off the programme is the cheerful, folk-inflected Symphony No. 2 or the Little Russian, coloured by Tchaikovsky's own Russian heritage.
