Kandinsky and Schoenberg 1911-1912

In 1908 Kandinsky heard Schoenberg's music for the first time at a Munich concert - it was an encounter that made him understand the full potential of an abstract art. "In your works you have put into practice something I have greatly longed for in music...the independent passage through individual adventures, the intrinsic life of the individual parts in your compositions is precisely what I too am attempting to find the field of painting." This concert traces their artistic exchange.Starting with a few prophetic works for reciter and for chamber ensemble which set the textual and instrumental context and including Schoenberg's astounding 5 minute poem for high sporano, Herzegwachse (first published by Kandinsky in the Blue Rider Almanac, it concludes with a full staging of Pierrot Lunaire, a 'cabaret superiure' for which we have traced documentation and sources to recreate the theatrical circumstances of the very first performance. The programme is completed with works by Liszt.
