A Midsummer Night's Dream archiveOn a midsummer's night Hermia and her lover Lysander flee from Athens and Demetrius - the man Hermia's father favours as a son-in-law. Demetrius follows, pursued by Helena who loves him in spite of being spurned in favour of Hermia. On the same night Bottom and his friends leave Athens to find somewhere quiet to rehearse their play which is to be performed at the wedding feast of Duke Theseus. Drawn into the woods they enter a world of magic, mystery and wonder.

Set beneath heritage trees within our picture-perfect Gardens, this is A Midsummer Night's Dream in uniquely botanical surroundings. As twilight falls, the stage is set for Shakespeare under the stars. This beguiling comedy of enchantment and transformation is brought to life within a dream-like woodland filled with feuding fairies, eloping lovers and a hapless troupe of actors. There's magic in the air alongside wild thyme, oxlips, nodding violets, luscious woodbine, sweet musk roses and eglantine. It's an alfresco play peppered with contemporary references. Into the mix add a spellbinding potion and a mischievous sprite for a summer night of mayhem like no other.Presented byAustralian Shakespeare Company. Presented byRoyal Botanic Gardens Kew.

Tom Morris and Handspring Puppet Company join forces once again to realise one of Shakespeare's most popular and fantastical plays, in their first collaboration since the hugely successful War Horse. A shape-shifting Puck is conjured from a selection of workman's tools, an eight-foot-tall Titania presides over a troupe of malevolent fairies and a giant, controlling Oberon manipulates his fairy queen and meddles in the confusion of the squabbling lovers. This is a delightful production, a riotous display of irreverent comedy in which anything can come to life and be transformed. Age guidance: 12+. The Dream: set before the start of the Great War. This adaptation transports fantastical characters to a time of unparalleled peace and prosperity. Four young lovers, a band of hapless actors, and a magical realm populated by enchanting spirits set on causing mischief and mayhem at every turn, culminates in an evening of beauty and hilarity. The Nightmare: set at the height of the First World War. This haunting adaptation transports us to an unforgettable era in which the greatest war of modern times threatens to tear love apart and where, in the dead of night, the dark, dangerous woods become the playground to the mourning spirits of those who have fallen before their time. Both versions will have the same cast with each actor playing the same role. If you think you know this story, think again. Will you dream with the fairies or end up in a nightmare? The choice is yours.Company Immersion Theatre Company. Director James Tobias.

Shakespeare's inexhaustible A Midsummer Night's Dream unfurls in the intimacy of our recently redeveloped Theatre, interweaving the lives of lovers, actors, friends, foes and fairies. This is a ...Dream about love, lust, survival, song and superstition, where a belief in the mystical presence of fairies isn't mere superstition, but encoded in the routines of a community living on the edge of viability. This is a future primitive world, a hard world, a world of survival and instinct; a world in which trees, objects and tools all pulse and tingle with the possibility of existence. A world in which, thanks to the magic of Handspring, all objects are granted the right to life. Having last worked together on the phenomenal, internationally acclaimed War Horse, Bristol Old Vic's Artistic Director Tom Morris and Cape Town's Handspring Puppet Company reunite to begin a new journey in Bristol, before touring throughout the world over the next few years.Producer Bristol Old Vic. Created in India with Indian and Sri Lankan performers and creative team. The production is the culmination of a project that began in autumn 2004 when the British Council in India and Sri Lanka commissioned [Tim Supple] to create and direct a theatre production to tour. A cast of 23 dancers, musicians, actors and performers from a hugely diverse range of locations and backgrounds came together for a seven week rehearsal process to create a production which is performed in English, Tamil, Malaysian, Sinhalese, Hindi, Bengali, Marathi and even a little Sanskrit. The result is a re-interpretation of the play, which casts aside familiar traditions of performing Shakespeare and replaces them with an epic, visceral and emotional power.Producer Roger Chapman. This adaptation is set against the backdrop of Ancient Japan in the Tokugawa Shogunate, using elements of the far east to present this already astounding piece in an original and fascinating new vision. Drawing from such inspiration as the feudal classes, the Shinto religion and Kabuki theatre, this production carries the majesty and decadence of the orient into a timeless piece of western literature and theatre.Company UKC Dramatics.
