What a truly wonderful show this is. Sondheim himself says it has no plot, it requires a very large cast and it is a complex set-up, no wonder it is sometimes referred to as his "problem musical" - but problem no more as this fabulous production gets it spot on.
Beautifully (and cleverly) set we are taken to the soon to be demolished theatre where the Follies took place for a one-time reunion of the girls. The songs are clever, funny and poignant and the story, small though its is, takes you in. This is acted like a full blown drama rather than a musical and as such we totally buy in to the characters and their lives. When Imelda Staunton's Sally breaks downat the end I choked, this is one time when the close-up achieved by the cameras probably outweighted the downside of not seeing the whole stage vista.
I adored this show ...
