Ok, I confess, I saw this at the Edinburgh Fringe earlier in the year. When I saw it was coming to the Southwark Playhouse I wanted to come and review it again even though, due to other commitments, it resulted in an 11 hour round trip in the car for a 70 minute show. Does that sound like I enjoyed it?
I love this show and really, really hope that a soundtrack will be available sometime. This is brilliant storytelling, a Scottish folk tale brought into a modern world and told with passion, innovative sound, great musicality, sensitivity and commitment. Bethany Tennick and Kirsty Findlay produce a whole community of characters (and two whales) plus their own sound effects and some quite beautiful looped singing - they make it look effortless but it clearly is far from that. Finn Anderson's songs are quite stunning, beautiful and emotive and direction from Amy Draper keeps everything moving along but with some lovely changes of pace.
I love this show ...
