Oxford Philomusica archiveThe Oxford Philomusica has become one of the busiest regional professional orchestras in the country. The talented Soloists of Oxford Philomusica return to the North Wall, this time with a dazzling performance from members of the orchestra's wind section. Their chamber music skills will shine through Barber's Summer Music, a work as much an instrumental showcase as it is evocative of a perfect lazy summer day. Excerpts from Six Metamorphoses after Ovid provide a fitting tribute to their composer, Benjamin Britten, in his centenary year. Originally written as incidental music to a play, Debussy's beguiling and fantastical Syrinx is now recognised as a seminal part of the flute repertoire. Ibert's charming set of miniatures for oboe, clarinet and bassoon are a delightful antithesis to Syrinx's bold statement.
