Originally hailing from New York but immersed in music of all cultures, the Emerson Quartet is uniquely placed to interpret Dvorák's American Quartet and Quintet, which end their focus. Written alongside his New World Symphony, Dvorák viewed these works as musical postcards, capturing the essence of his time in Iowa. Dvorák explained that in these works he 'wanted to write something really melodious and simple', declaring: 'I should never have written these works "just so" if I hadn't seen America.'
