Shostakovich Cycle - T973361226

Over three nights, the ensemble perform a cycle of Shostakovich's quartets, which contain some of the composer's most personal music. His quartets are often thought to make up virtually a musical autobiography and are full of contrasts: joy and anguish, folk melodies and angular modernism, tenderness and violence.

Originally hailing from New York but immersed in music of all cultures, the Emerson Quartet is uniquely placed to interpret Dvorák's American Quartet and Quintet, which end their focus. Written alongside his New World Symphony, Dvorák viewed these works as musical postcards, capturing the essence of his time in Iowa. Dvorák explained that in these works he 'wanted to write something really melodious and simple', declaring: 'I should never have written these works "just so" if I hadn't seen America.'Performer Paul Neubauer (viola).

It was these letters between himself and Kamila that Janácek enshrined in his Intimate Letters Quartet, which is at the heart of the Emerson Quartet's second concert in this series. So passionate were Janácek's feelings that he said the work had been written 'in fire', whereas earlier pieces were 'written only in hot ash.' The work is heard alongside two of Dvorák's Late Quartets, in the last of which Dvorák anticipates Janácek's style with his innovative approach to rhythm.

The first concert in this series features works inspired by the rich tradition of Czech folk music. A quartet and piano quintet by Dvorak - both filled with Czech and Slavonic melodies - frame the programme, which also includes music by a later Czech composer, Janacek. The First String Quartet by Janacek is called The Kreutzer Sonata after a novella of the same name by Tolstoy. In a letter to Kamila Stosslova - the young woman who was the object of his desire later in life - Janacek wrote of the piece: 'I was imagining a poor woman, tormented and run down, just like the one the Russian writer Tolstoy describes in his Kreutzer Sonata.'Performer Menahem Pressler (piano).

Beethoven's Serioso quartet is one of the shortest and most compact of all his string quartets. Written in 1810, Beethoven wrote the work was meant 'for a small circle of connoisseurs and should never be publicly performed', as he thought audiences of the time would not be ready for its dramatic, colourful style.

The American-based Emerson String Quartet perform four varied works, including one of Mozart's Prussian quartets, which shows the composer at his most melodic, with each of the four instruments treated as soloists by turn. The concert also contains Ravel's intensely lyrical quartet, dedicated to his teacher, Faure.
