with Christian Zacharias - T704724887Known for his insightful interpretations, German master-pianist Christian Zacharias returns to work with the ECO as both soloist and conductor in works that perfectly showcase his artistry. He performs Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto, a work that expresses the composer's turbulent feelings towards his uncertain future through dramatic and melancholy melodies. Zacharias conducts a selection of movements from Beethoven's enchanting ballet score The Creatures of Prometheus and Schoenberg's innovative tone poem Verklarte Nacht (Transfigured Night), performed here in its orchestral version. This work is a favourite of the ECO, the orchestra having recorded it three times previously.Music Beethoven (Movements from The Creatures of Prometheus Op.43). T0885415858The most recorded chamber orchestra in the world, English Chamber Orchestra play the penultimate concert of our 2014-15 season. British pianist and conductor Howard Shelley OBE leads the orchestra and performs Mozart's Piano Concerto No.21. The concert opens with Grieg's Holberg Suite, which was composed to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of playwright Ludvig Holberg who, like Grieg, was born in the city of Bergen in Norway. The Suite, which consists of five movements based on eighteenth century dance forms, was originally composed for the piano but later adapted for a string orchestra. Handel's Water Music Suite no.2 was written for an outdoor performance on the River Thames in honour of King George I in 1717. The Suite opens with a French-style Overture, continues through a jaunty 'Bouree', a stately 'Minuet' and finishes with the grand 'Alla Hornpipe'. The concert is brought to a close with a performance of Schubert's Symphony No.5. Written when the composer was aged just 19, the piece exudes a youthful exuberance which resembles Mozart, whom Schubert greatly admired.Director Howard Shelley (piano).

T0953635331The masked stranger, the mysterious commission, the dying Mozart frantically composing as his life ebbed away... if you've seen the play or film Amadeus, you'll know the legend behind Mozart's Requiem. But the reality is even more incredible - music's greatest genius comes to terms with the ultimate mystery of human existence, and finds sorrow, courage and deep compassion, then pours it all out in music of unforgettable beauty and power. The University of Warwick's own Chamber Choir, under Director of Music Paul McGrath, join the English Chamber Orchestra for one of the high points of our season. First, though, McGrath and ECO celebrate the work of two of Mozart's greatest 20th century fans. On the eve of the Second World War, B?la Bart?k wrote a Divertimento that channelled the spirit of Mozart for an age of anxiety. Britten's Simple Symphony reworks the tunes he hummed at school into a mini-masterpiece of irresistible freshness - tongue firmly in cheek.Conductor Paul McGrath. T0410317942The English Chamber Orchestra is one of the world's leading chamber orchestras, having performed in more countries than any other orchestra, recorded over 1,200 works and played with the world's greatest musicians. Led by the acclaimed young British conductor and cellist Paul Watkins, ECO presents an evening of what can best be described as beautiful music. The first symphony Beethoven wrote and excerpts from his familiar Prometheus Overture and Ballet Music form a sandwich with Butterworth's quintessentially English Bank's of Green Willow and Tchaikovsky's delightful cello work Rococo Variations as the rich filling. Last season the acclaimed young British conductor and cellist Paul Watkins was appointed Music Director and Principal Conductor of the ECO, after two years as its Associate Conductor.Conductor Paul Watikins (cello).
