Mitsuko Uchida brings Beethoven's last, towering keyboard masterpiece to Royal Festival Hall. His Diabelli Variations contain startling and original music, full of humour, pathos, virtuosity and humanity. Alongside this, she performs some of Schubert's poetic and other-worldly Impromptus. Uchida, a winner of numerous awards, received her musical training in Vienna and has long been associated with that city's most famous composers, including the two featured here.

and Friends - T314449774

One of the world’s most compelling musicians, Mitsuko Uchida is a devotee of the Aldeburgh experience. Finding inspiration in its unique combination of peace and quiet intensity she chooses to make many of her recordings here. It was therefore an obvious choice for her first Aldeburgh Residency preparing Schoenberg’s masterpiece of expressionist cabaret Pierrot Lunaire - a work for which Schoenberg himself demanded 40 rehearsals! For this project she is joined by an extraordinary line-up of international soloists and the German actress and film star, Barbara Sukowa for a performance which promises to meld the cool glamour of a Fassbinder film with Uchida’s own matchless musical pedigree. She completes the programme with two of her favourite chamber works from the Vienna of a century earlier. An unrivalled opportunity to witness great musicians in the white heat of the creative process.Performer Mitsuko Uchida (piano). Performer Barbara Sukowa (narrator). Performer Mark Steinberg (violin). Performer Clemens Hagen (cello). Performer Marina Piccinini (flute). Performer Anthony McGill (clarinet).

One of today’s most distinguished artists, Mitsuko Uchida presents a programme from the very heart of the piano repertoire. Celebrated for her interpretations of the Viennese classics, she features Beethoven’s two-movement Sonata Op.90, an intense piece that traces a path from conflict to tranquillity. She continues with Schumann’s whimsical cycle Davidsbündlertänze which shows the composer at his most effervescent and poetic. The second half is devoted to Chopin. Uchida’s combination of fire, subtlety, charisma and intellect make her an ideal interpreter for this much-loved music.

Plays Beethoven - T1623764952

Beethoven Piano Sonata No. 30 in E major, Op.109 Piano Sonata No. 31 in A flat major, Op. 110 Piano Sonata No. 32 in C minor, Opus 111 We’re thrilled this internationally renowned pianist is returning to Perth for another Scottish exclusive, playing Beethoven’s last 3 piano sonatas. Beethoven was deaf by the time he wrote them, so they are very much music he heard in his mind and through the vibrations under his fingers only. These are visionary, soul searching, ‘blow you out of the water’ kind of works. To hear all three in one sitting is very, very rare - especially by as great an interpreter as Mitsuko Uchida.

Mitsuko Uchida, one of today’s most revered artists, brings two substantial works of astonishing originality to the Royal Festival Hall: Beethoven’s Op.101, which in the composer’s output immediately precedes the ‘Hammerklavier’, and Schumann’s great C major Fantasy, both a tribute to Beethoven and an inspired paen of love. "Matchless pianism, tastefully stretched tempi, rapt fugato voices and crystalline articulation abound" (Independent on Sunday).
