Sponsored (2002) by The Friends of Covent Garden. In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated - This work takes the athleticism of classical ballet techniques as its starting point, and pushes dancers to the limits of their technical and physical ability. A rapid, complex and highly energetic work, this one-act ballet is set to the frenetic synthesised rhythms of Thom Willems. It was first danced by The Royal Ballet in 1992. Por Vos Muero (For Thee I Die) - a portrayal of love and courtly manners wet to 16-century Spanish music based on a poem of the same name. Carmen - is from the Swedish choreographer Mats Ek who has taken the story made famous by Bizet and played with the original gender stereotypes, giving the heroine an almost masculine swagger and pathos and sentiment to the role of Don Jose.
