Julia Cheng and Si Rawlinson: Orlando Warrior/Ink
Orlando Warrior - Choreographed and performed by Julia Cheng, this solo contemporary dance piece accompanied by live music explores the myth of a modern Mu-Lan. Externalising her inner battles through wu-shu martial arts and waacking, this piece examines displacement and hybrid identity, masking a yang (male) fighter behind a yin (female) form, travelling through time via physical paintings of a Warrior Poet in motion.
Ink - Mixing break and contemporary dance, Ink is about the struggle between the desires of state and citizen, embodied in the movement and aesthetic of Chinese calligraphy. Drawing inspiration from the imagery of cinematographer Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers) and the social commentary of contemporary artist and activist Ai Weiwei, we follow a writer who walks a fine line between art and dissidence. When ?maintaining cultural values' is the difference between freedom, imprisonment, exile or worse, a writer's life hangs on his words.
