& Guests: Classical Departures - T01136554324

Southbank Centre artist-in-residence, Gauri Sharma Tripathi, is a leading kathak artist whose work is much loved in the UK and India. It is deeply grounded in the classical South Asian dance form, to which she brings a unique, contemporary twist. Gauri has asked three artists - her friends and collaborators Mavin Khoo, Anita Ratnam and Chitra Sundaram - to share the stage with her for this one-off evening. All are bharatanatyam dancers travelling on a similar artistic journey, involving a departure from and a return to tradition. 'I have invited artists who are great personal friends and share a passion for reinventing the classical forms that ground us. I've watched them flourish in their practice and delight in the idea of reuniting with them all for Alchemy.' (Gauri Sharma Tripathi) There will be a post-show discussion after the performance.

Kireet - T066396431

Gauri Sharma Tripathi is a key exponent of the north Indian classical dance form of Kathak. She is due to premiere 'Kireet' in autumn 2010 at Southbank Centre - a new production bringing together the music of regular collaborator Niraj Chag with young British-Asian and Indian dancers. Exclusively for Alchemy, Gauri presents the work in development, performed solo with accompaniment from Guru Padma Sharma (padhant), Sanju Sahai (tabla), Shoumik Datta (sarod) and Chandra Chakraborty (vocals). Acclaimed UK-based Malaysian choreographer and dancer Mavin Khoo presents an extract from his new production 'Dancing the Shiva'. A solo performance of Bharata Natyam, one of the oldest and most practised forms of South Indian classical dance styles, it explores the multi-layered facets of the Hindu deity Shiva through the prism of love in separation, a central concept for this style. In a personal exploration, Khoo brings together the grammar of classicism and a sensitive interpretation for our time.
