Voices of Partition explores the tragic events surrounding, and the legacy of the partition of British India in 1947. A principle aim of the theatre debates has been to foster a spirit of reconciliation and healing between British Panjabi people of Hindu, Muslim, Christian and Sikh backgrounds and all other communities who have suffered the consequences of partitions.

Launch Night: A Lifetime of Tiptoes/Trwy Waed y Galon - T192563837

The culmination of the Sangat series of events, this special evening celebrates the launch of Menna Elfyn’s Welsh translation of Mazhar Tirmazi’s play ‘A Lifetime on Tiptoes’. The tri-lingual publication in Panjabi, Welsh and English is a first for the Drama Association of Wales. The evening features readings by Menna Elfyn and Mazhar Tirmazi and live music by Kuljit Bhamra. A pioneer of the Bhangra phenomenon, Bhamra combines traditional Indian rhythms with western instruments to transform Panjabi music into a new sound. The evening is chaired by Chapter’s departing director Janek Alexander.

Women and Partition - T01979116826

Part of the Sangat series of events, this evening explores the stories of women during the Partition of British India in 1947, uncovering a silent history of violence, migration and resettlement. Often sheltered from private and public areas, women created their own space during this complex and traumatic time. The event features music from Panjabi folk singer Sanyogita Kumari and a talk by Dr Pippa Virdee, senior lecturer in modern south Asian history at De Montfort University. Chaired by Frances Medley of the Magdalena Project (the international network for women in contemporary theatre).

Part of the Sangat series of debates, this event celebrates the tradition of the Panjabi folk song, and features live music from Kuljit Bhamra and guests from Wales and England. Bhamra is a pioneer of the Bhangra phenomenon. He combines traditional Indian rhythms with western instruments and techniques to transform Panjabi music into a new sound. Voices of Partition explores the tragic events surrounding, and the legacy of, the partition of British India in 1947. This project is being marked by six monthly debates at Chapter, culminating in July 2011 with the launch of a Welsh translation of the play A Lifetime on Tiptoes by Mazhar Tirmazi.

This evening of music and spoken word celebrates the beginning of ‘Sangat’, a coming together of cultures within Wales inspired by the legacies of the partition of British India and the formation of Pakistan and India in 1947. The evening features contributions from playwright Mazhar Tirmazi; the Sangat Community Chorus of Barry and the Vale (pictured); Welsh-Estonian folk duo, Sild; and poet Menna Elfyn who has recently written a new poem in aid of the Disaster Appeal in Pakistan. Voices of Partition is a new project featuring a series of debates and multi-lingual performances, readings and cultural exchanges.
