What a gloriously feelgood musical this is. Of course, being Cornwall based I am a sucker for a sea shanty and a local story but, as the movie showed, this is an universally appreciated tale. A large cast, versatile set and actor/musicians keep the story moving forward at a pace but fortunately leave space for the shanties which are the heart of the story - as well as some new songs and a dip into the Beggar's Opera! This is a real ensemble piece with some strong voices and good character playing that drew us in to this "village by the sea" and its troubles and success.
A full audience were fully engrossed in the production with singing along at the end - but then we were just over the border in Devon so local references and jokes went down well - I hope that they travel as the show deserves a warm reception on its forthcoming tour. Personally, I couldn't have been happier.
