This is the fifth edition of James R Alburger's book (published by Focal press) which was first published in 1998. At nearly 450 pages it is a detailed tome but what makes it partiocularly useful is that it is full of QR codes.
Ok, for those not in the know, a QR code is a scannable barcode that can be used to take you to, amongst other things, a web address. In this case, a lot of the codes are there to take you to an on-line sound file so that you can hear a professional reading of the snippets in the book. An excellent idea - so load up your barcode scanner and settle down ...
The book makes no claim to be able to take someone from cold and turn them into a wage earning Voice Artistm in fact it makes it clear that you wont get that far without some professional help, but what it does do is introduce the whole realm of voice work and provide guidance, examples and exercises to help you along the way. A quick look at the main chapters will give you an idea
Basically, as you can see, this goes the whole journey from "what is it" to "making money" .... I particularly liked "Stop It!", the section on What Not To Do ... a great set of hints to help you along. If you have ever considered voice work, or anyone has ever suggested that your voice might be suitable, then I seriously suggest that you read this book to get a handle on this fascinating area - who knows where your voice could end up, a video game, an animated film, a company video or a toothpaste commercial .... exciting stuff.
