David Tennant and Cush Jumbo at the Donmar Warehouse

Hamlet at DonmarThis is a fascinating new production done with binaural technology - which means that you have to wear headphones thoughout. The headphones allow for some amazing soundscapes and effects, in particular the inner monologues of the characters become intimate and the characters can whisper to each other and we can still hear. So, did the technology work to enhance the show? Well, mostly. It worked really well during intimate and introspective moments but I just felt that during the rest of the play, for instance when there were just a few characters speaking to each other, or the banquet scene, they were just trying too hard to justify the tech. Basically you have to wear the headphones all the time, you don't get to have them on just when they'd be an enhancement, so they had to fill the other bits to justify their use.

But beyond that, was this a good production. Yes, absolutely. David Tennant and Cush Jumbo are brilliant as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth and the rest of the cast provide superb, high energy performances. The music and general set are inventive, simple and the ycreate a wonderful atmosphere. At 115 minutes with no interval it is a fast-paced production throughout. The battle and fight are beautifully choreographed and the descent of Macbeth, from hero to murderous villain, is perfectly pointed ...

Fabulous.
