Rumpelstiltskin

Seen at the Park Theatre
By Daryl - 18th Dec 2022

Charles Court Opera has been performing innovative and witty pantomimes for many years, and this is their first production in association with the Park Theatre. They’ve always had a reputation for tackling non-traditional stories, and their current outing is no exception. The story of Rumpelstiltskin might not be an obvious choice, but it’s cleverly interwoven with other well-known fairy stories to deliver an innovative interpretation of the Brothers Grimm classic tale.

In the intimate setting of the Park 90 studio, the CCO cast delivers a fast-paced, quick-change, tongue-in-cheek performance. And as you would expect, the musical numbers and staging are excellent. It’s a strong ensemble piece with terrific work from all four cast members. Philip Lee is a Charles Court stalwart and in the eponymous role, he weaves the thread of the story with great aplomb. Emily Cairns, Tamoy Phipps and Lucy Whitney bring to life all the characters that Rumpelstiltskin meets along the way with extraordinary flair, and beautiful harmonies.

This is a non-traditional pantomime story delivered in a truly traditional style. Under John Savournin’s direction, every nuance and double-entendre is wrung out, and every opportunity to boo and cheer delivered effortlessly.
