The Notcracker contains sharp choreography, an unfortunate game of charades and an unhelpful Ghost of Christmas Present. Developed from the original idea for their 2004 Place Prize piece The Short Still Show, New Art Club creates a world of precarious logic where meaning is tossed into the air and comes crashing down around everyone’s ears. This is Modern - T0762639964This Is Modern is a full length comedy dance theatre show which tells the 100 year history of 20th Century dance. From Isadora Duncan through Martha Graham, Diaghilev, Merce Cunningham and Pina Bausch to the more contemporary trends of Eurocrash and Dancing and Talking (at the same time). It is a mock lecture demonstration which is as informative as it is hilarious. For the uninitiated to dance it is a history lesson with jokes and a kind of 'how to' of choreography. To the dance insider it is a funny and sometimes painful journey through the techniques and ideas that have shaped dancers' lives. Run time - 70 mins

The Notcracker - T02057037369In 1999, New Art Club (formerly Air Dance Company) wanted to make a Christmas show. The idea was to do a re-working of The Nutcracker, but have you seen it? It’s terrible, there isn’t anything to re-work. Instead, Tom and Pete made a christmas show and it’s being revived at gDA this year, which is more than you can say for The Nutcracker (which is probably on at Covent Garden). a christmas show is a collection of songs and dances that tell the story of an aspirant angel that fails to graduate from Angel College. Sharp choreography, an unfortunate game of charades and an extremely unhelpful Ghost of Christmas Present, New Art Club’s a christmas show is an alternative to traditional Christmas theatrical fayre. The show will not be suitable for children as it will feature festive swearing and perhaps some festival nudity, but then you could always take them to The Nutcracker that features a soldier that isn’t a soldier, he’s a nutcracker... like we said, terribleProducer New Art Club. Slide Show - T02002846762Like most choreographers, Tom and Pete, whilst waiting for the terpsichorean muse to strike, like to sit in their ivory tower and watch their favourite TV shows (DIY Plastic Surgery Nightmares, I'm a Fat Celebrity Watch Me Jog and Britain's Top 100 Numbers). However, since hearing how good Dance Umbrella was going to be this year they've decided to break the habit of a lifetime and actually go out to the theatre to see some dance. In fact they are going to see the whole lot. Every turn, every skip, every arthritis-inducing lift. They are going to try to get into every party and have a question answered at every post-show discussion. They want to be there to witness every choreographer's tantrum. They will read all the publicity and all the reviews and every article in every Sunday paper. They will trek across the capital night after night with nothing by an A to Z, a copy of Time Out, a camera and a desire to see the very best in the world of dance. And at the end of it all they will present a dance comedy show based on the experience - a diary of the days and nights of the hardiest festival go-ers under the umbrella.
