Clorinda Agonistes (Clorinda the Warrior) - T0454366727

World Premiere. The story in Monteverdi's ground-breaking operatic cantata, Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, tells of a love affair between a Saracen woman, Clorinda, renowned as a warrior and the Christian crusader Tancredi. Wearing full armour, she challenges him in combat and falls mortally wounded, only revealing her identity on her deathbed to his total dismay. Clorinda Agonistes is presented as a new dance-opera, performed live in both Monteverdi's version and a newly commissioned piece by Syrian-American composer Kareem Roustom. Created by award winning choreographer Shobana Jeyasingh CBE, the company returns to The Grange after their riveting performance of Contagion in Precipice in 2020. Tenor Ed Lyon (Belmonte in 2018) and Robert Hollingworth (of I Fagiolini) perform both works. This project explores current preoccupations of gender identity and east-west cultural relationships, as well as being a powerful fusion of dance and opera. This programme will be complimented by a first half of Balletic Dance performed by soloists from our national companies to be confirmed at a later date.

Staging Schiele - T01644035461

Colour, masterful lines and unusual perspectives: four dancers inhabit the highly charged world of the artist Egon Schiele, putting the human body on visceral display. Fresh from the success of 2018's Contagion (one of the year's top ten dance works for The Guardian and Evening Standard), Shobana Jeyasingh Dance returns with Staging Schiele. Inspired by the extraordinary work and life of the Austrian artist, famous for his unflinching nudes and searing self portraits, the piece scrutinises the eternal conundrum of the male artist and the female model. Jeyasingh's award-winning choreography matches the intensity of Schiele, engaging with his anxieties as well as his supreme self-confidence. Staging Schiele captures the artist's own self-conscious framing of himself and his work. Both intimate and formal, it throws light on his brief meteoric rise to fame.Music Orlando Gough. Contagion - T01078705821

In 1918 the Spanish flu pandemic infected one third of the world's population and killed over 50 million people. Directly exacerbated by troop and civilian migrations from the First World War, the virus killed more people than the war itself. Contagion is a 40-minute promenade piece for war, art and science-related venues, opening at the Gymnasium Gallery in Berwick-upon-Tweed, a former army barracks where soldiers were sent to keep fit during the first world war. Contagion is inspired by the nature and rapid spread of the flu virus ? the unseen enemy that mankind was battling within, while engaging in more conventional warfare in the world outside.

Bayadere/The Ninth Life - T01189525527

Ground-breaking dance-maker Shobana Jeyasingh brings her radical imagination to Petipa's legendary ballet La Bayad?re. More than a retelling it searches for the roots of the Bayadere herself and the allure she exerted in Europe over the centuries. The words of the celebrated French writer Th?ophile Gautier, who recorded his ambiguous impressions of Indian temple dancers in 1838, add to the rich mix of Gabriel Prokofiev's specially commissioned score to form a unique and personal work. Featuring a bold new design created by the award-winning contemporary theatre designer Tom Piper, following its premiere at the Linbury Studio Theatre, Royal Opera House in 2015.

The piece brings together star soloists Sooraj Subramaniam and Shailesh Bahoran, artists of the Indian diaspora whose backgrounds are in classical and hip-hop dance respectively. Contrasts in style and similarities of origin are the starting points for an exploration of rhythm, location and shared history. Strange Blooms is an ensemble work inspired by the cellular life of plants, presenting a complex interplay of energy and pattern and Jeyasingh's practice of collaboration with contemporary composers sees her working with Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin in the new commission funded by the RPS Drummond Fund.

25th Anniversary - T1728122821

We celebrate the 25th anniversary of Shobana Jeyasingh's company with a brand new piece. Shobana Jeyasingh is renowned for dance creations of visceral energy and excellence as well as collaborations with outstanding composers. This autumn Southbank Centre celebrates her company's 25th anniversary with a new commission for Queen Elizabeth Hall. For her new piece Jeyasingh works with Gabriel Prokofiev, a classically-trained composer who revels in the latest technology. Together they re-imagine and re-mix early baroque music with all its exuberance, ornamentation and contrast. The new work appears in a double bill with Configurations, Jeyasingh's seminal 1988 piece celebrated for its exhilarating speed and stunning detail. Mathematical rhythmic patterns from classical Indian dance are deployed to create a remarkably fresh and contemporary work. Michael Nyman's original music, which became known as his acclaimed String Quartet No.2, is played live on stage for these performances.

Classic Cut: Configurarions and Dev Kahan Hai?/Where is Dev? - T1726422759

The original Configurations was widely celebrated for its bravura use of speed and stunning detail. Revisiting and reimagining it for two men and two women, Jeyasingh gives a glimpse into the beginning of her company's life and the inspirational collaboration between choreographer and composer (captured in an hour-long Channel 4 TV documentary at the time). Nyman's music for Configurations became his acclaimed String Quartet No. 2 and will be played live on stage by the Smith Quartet in London and the Benyounes Quartet in Eastleigh, Birmingham and Taunton (other performances use recordings). New designs by Lucy Carter (lighting) and Ursula Bombshell (costume) complete the picture. In Dev Kahan Hai?/Where is Dev?, Jeyasingh turns for the first time to the dramatic genre of classical Indian dance, inspired by the intense formal dramas of countless Indian films. Dev Kahan Hai?/Where is Dev? is the first sample in Niraj Chag's Bollywood-tinged score and is Jeyasingh's first title in Hindi, a language she doesn't speak. Niraj Chag is a key modern interpreter of Asian classical and folk styles and his work has been described as ?resembling prayer in its power'. Jeyasingh's music director Glyn Perrin oversees the development of the commission while her frequent collaborator Pete Gomes makes accompanying film. Classic Cut is the first project in a three-year artistic and education programme of work put together to celebrate Shobana Jeyasingh's creative journey over the last 25 years. The programme also includes an international collaborative work with artists from the UK and India in 2012/2013; a new mid-scale work to celebrate the 25th anniversary itself in 2013; and a series of participation and learning projects throughout the next three years. Faultline/New Work - T0514235705

World Premiere. The lastest in a series of Dance Umbrella/Dance UK discussions, focuses on the current lack of high profile UK female choreographers, arguments about which have recently made a splash across the arts press. This has triggered fiery exchanges about the validity of the debate, the barriers to women's professional development and, what steps, if any, might be taken to promote women in choreography. Historically, the dance sector and choreography has been dominated by iconic female figures, from Martha Graham and Bronislava Nijinska, to Pina Bausch and Germaine Acogny, so why in the UK today is there a perception that we have a problem? Linda Jasper, Director of Youth Dance England, chairs a debate discussing the issues with choreographers Siobhan Davies, Charlotte Vincent, Kettly Noël and Nelisiwe Xaba; Brendan Keany, Director of Greenwich Dance Agency; and Julia Carruthers, Executive Director of Akram Khan Company. In partnership with Dance UK.

Faultline/Exit No Exit - T01527269621

A fusion of contemporary dance and classical Asian styles, Faultline reflects the tensions and contradictions of Asian youth in the UK. International dancers resonate with the survival instinct of the young in today’s fastpaced, urban Britain. Film footage by Pete Gomes epitomises the anxiety and energy of the street; whilst haunting, atmospheric music features an electro-score by Scanner, overlaid with vocals by Errolyn Wallen and sung live by soprano, Patricia Rosario. In Exit No Exit, Michael Nyman’s music propels six dancers effortlessly on and off the stage. In the centre, a soloist remains trapped. The anticipation of entrances and the impossibility of exits are coloured by the shifting patterns creeping across the stage. Internationally recognised, Shobana Jeyasingh has captivated and engaged audiences for almost twenty years with her dynamic, fearless and enigmatic choreography.

Exit No Exit/Flicker - T76238730

A meditation on endings and the enigma of departure. Nyman’s soundtrack for Exit No Exit is a partner piece to his earlier string quartet (Beckham Crosses/Nyman Scores) which featured a sample of world cup football commentary from John Motson. Jeyasingh commissioned Nyman to write a new piece for string quartet, this time in strikingly unusual combination with a solo bass clarinet - played live on tour by Andy Keenan. The most thrillingly modern of choreographers, Shobana Jeyasingh creates scintillating danceworks that reflect and illuminate the complex currents of contemporary urban life. In Exit No Exit Jeyasingh's seven magnificent dancers are propelled by the anticipation of entrances and the impossibility of easy exits. Jeyasingh says: "Some stories are told because there is no way out. Some trap us and others we choose to be trapped inside." Exit No Exit is part of a double bill with Jeyasingh’s and Nyman’s second collaboration, Flicker, which premiered in January 2005.Music Michael Nyman.

Phantasmaton/[h]Interland - T1463526754

Phantasmaton celebrates the modern Britain with six highly skilled dancers, giving a potent sense of the excitement and edginess of urban life. Featuring dancers in sexually ambivalent costumes interacting with a classically dressed Indian performer on film, Phantasmaton debuted to national acclaim in spring 2002. In Hinterland, two live dancers on stage are joined by a third, filmed on a terrace overlooking Bangalore, challenging our ideas of space, time and place. This new work is inspired by our complicated cultural hinterlands, reflecting the diverse background and experiences of Shobana and the dancers. [h]Interland premiered in autumn 2002 at the place where time starts - the Greenwich meridian.
