Clorinda Agonistes (Clorinda the Warrior) - T0454366727World Premiere. The story in Monteverdi's ground-breaking operatic cantata, Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, tells of a love affair between a Saracen woman, Clorinda, renowned as a warrior and the Christian crusader Tancredi. Wearing full armour, she challenges him in combat and falls mortally wounded, only revealing her identity on her deathbed to his total dismay. Clorinda Agonistes is presented as a new dance-opera, performed live in both Monteverdi's version and a newly commissioned piece by Syrian-American composer Kareem Roustom. Created by award winning choreographer Shobana Jeyasingh CBE, the company returns to The Grange after their riveting performance of Contagion in Precipice in 2020. Tenor Ed Lyon (Belmonte in 2018) and Robert Hollingworth (of I Fagiolini) perform both works. This project explores current preoccupations of gender identity and east-west cultural relationships, as well as being a powerful fusion of dance and opera. Directly exacerbated by troop and civilian migrations from the First World War, the virus killed more people than the war itself. Contagion is a 40-minute promenade piece for war, art and science-related venues, opening at the Gymnasium Gallery in Berwick-upon-Tweed, a former army barracks where soldiers were sent to keep fit during the first world war. Revisiting and reimagining it for two men and two women, Jeyasingh gives a glimpse into the beginning of her company's life and the inspirational collaboration between choreographer and composer (captured in an hour-long Channel 4 TV documentary at the time). Nyman's music for Configurations became his acclaimed String Quartet No. 2 and will be played live on stage by the Smith Quartet in London and the Benyounes Quartet in Eastleigh, Birmingham and Taunton (other performances use recordings). New designs by Lucy Carter (lighting) and Ursula Bombshell (costume) complete the picture. In Dev Kahan Hai?/Where is Dev?, Jeyasingh turns for the first time to the dramatic genre of classical Indian dance, inspired by the intense formal dramas of countless Indian films. Dev Kahan Hai?/Where is Dev? is the first sample in Niraj Chag's Bollywood-tinged score and is Jeyasingh's first title in Hindi, a language she doesn't speak. Niraj Chag is a key modern interpreter of Asian classical and folk styles and his work has been described as ?resembling prayer in its power'. Jeyasingh's music director Glyn Perrin oversees the development of the commission while her frequent collaborator Pete Gomes makes accompanying film. Classic Cut is the first project in a three-year artistic and education programme of work put together to celebrate Shobana Jeyasingh's creative journey over the last 25 years. Featuring dancers in sexually ambivalent costumes interacting with a classically dressed Indian performer on film, Phantasmaton debuted to national acclaim in spring 2002. In Hinterland, two live dancers on stage are joined by a third, filmed on a terrace overlooking Bangalore, challenging our ideas of space, time and place. This new work is inspired by our complicated cultural hinterlands, reflecting the diverse background and experiences of Shobana and the dancers.
