The Four Seasons - T1975620050

Finnish violinist and conductor Pekka Kuusisto leads one of Europe's top chamber orchestras, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, in a Prom part-inspired by the natural world. A BBC documentary was the starting point for Swedish composer Andrea Tarrodi's Birds of Paradise, whose iridescent colours and sharp textural contrasts capture the exotic birds. Closer to home, a cuckoo calls out in Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, whose pastoral scenes are heard as never before here - interspersed with folk music improvisations by Kuusisto and citternist Ale Carr. Beethoven's youthful First Symphony forms the beating heart of the programme.Performer Ale Carr (cittern). Company Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. Conductor Pekka Kuusisto (violin).

The Planets - T01123501004

A concert of 20th-century classics from Kirill Karabits and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra continues a weekend marking the 50th anniversary of the first manned mission to land on the Moon. Space travel has never been more richly imagined than in Holst's suite The Planets, but in order to get there you'll need to take a Short Ride in a Fast Machine, courtesy of John Adams's exhilarating, propulsive Minimalist masterpiece. The lyrical beauty of Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto, with its exquisite slow movement, offers a contrasting moment of contemplation. Dynamic Franco-Serbian violinist Nemanja Radulovic makes his Proms debut as soloist.Performer Nemanja Radulovic (violin). Company Trinity Boys Choir. Company Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Respigni, Ravel and Adams - T1939520900

Our series celebrating young orchestras and choirs in many forms begins with a collaboration between two major music colleges from either side of the Atlantic. Their suitably continent-crossing programme begins with Respighi's exuberantly cinematic survey of the festivals of Rome, the eternal city, and ends with John Adams's symphonic triptych evoking the mood of 1950s Los Angeles. Ravel's vivacious, blues-tinged concerto elegantly bridges the two worlds. Finish time: approx. 21:35Performer Imogen Cooper (piano). Company Juilliard Orchestra. Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra - T531385680

As the moody Romantic hero par excellence, Byron's Manfred appealed to artists across the board. While the brooding overture of Schumann's incidental music captures the tale's supernatural Alpine setting, Tchaikovsky's response is a fusion of tone-poem and Classical form whose full-length portrait of the protagonist stands as one of its composer's greatest achievements.
