This is a muddled overlong interpretation of the story. There are some interesting performances, some of which are a bit too extreme. There is a lot of exposition which does not clarify the storyline. It seems very effortful and can drag, the major characters of Dyonysus and Pentheus are well played. An opportunity is missed having Pentheus change behind a curtain- there is already enough report: let us see! His death is effective as one of the powerful visuals. However we never see enough of the women’s dance to explain why it should be so shocking. At the end I was confused that the God revealed that his revenge was against the family for not venerating his mother. Clearer storytelling, quicker, please.
